Flow Movie Review

A beautiful movie about a cat and other animals surviving a flood. The plot is relatively simple, but still entertaining. Basically, a flood suddenly runs through the cat’s homeland, the cat finds a capybara with a ship to live with, and the cat becomes friends with the animals that join them along the way. The twist? There’s no talking. Despite just having meows, barks, caws, and grunts, the plot is understandable because of the beautiful animation and expressions.
The main character, the cat’s, design is simple: a plain black cat. Because of the simplicity, it is easy to project your own cat into their place. The animation was wonderful and lifelike. The cat had sudden movements, like they do in real life. The capybara was slow and lumbering. The dog was quick and playful. The animation of the water was also impressive.
One last pro I will cover about the movie was the character development, my favorite story technique. After the flood in the start, the cat clearly was traumatized by water. With the cat’s eyes wide open, you can really sense the fear running through their head. Over the course of the story, the cat gets more used to the water, and the other animals on the ship. In one scene, the cat jumps in the water to catch fish. After piling up around ten, the dog tilts their head, seeming to ask ‘can I have one?’. The cat is hesitant at first, as they aren’t very close with the others yet. However, the cat offers a fish to the dog. The cat also gives fish to the other animals on board. This shows two parts of character development in the cat: conquering their fear of water, and forming relationships with others.
If you have not seen this movie, you should watch it now!! It is amazing, and may leave you with a tear in your eye. To summarize, Flow is a stunning animated movie that everyone should see.
